Rollins School of Public Health
This photo was taken during one of the community-based tours offered by the Nyamirambo Women’s Center. We learned about the problems facing the families in this community. Our tour ended with our guide telling us that “Mirambo” means “dead bodies.” She explained that while many areas changed names following the genocide, this neighborhood decided to keep this name in order to remember those who were killed. 2019 marked the 25th anniversary of the genocide. Rather than be defined by this tragic event, Rwanda has emerged as a premier example of a government that prioritizes public health.
