A portion of the Himalayas towers over the town of Dharamshala midday. Situated 1,500m above sea level and surrounded by one of the most impressive geographical landscapes, the city of Dharamshala is met with unique challenges in addressing social determinants of health. The high altitude makes it difficult for skilled labor to construct infrastructural resources such as hospitals or schools because of the reduced atmospheric oxygen. Proper sewage systems and makeshift aqueducts must be designed to collect and dispose of waste water without contaminating the populace at the base of the mountains. Individuals willing to take this onus are sparse, and those skilled and knowledgeable enough to implement such services are even rarer.
