Rollins School of Public Health
An outside observer may see WhizzKids as an afterschool program where children from the surrounding community can play together and escape the dangers of the streets. This is true, but there is so much more to it than that.
WhizzKids United trains football coaches to deliver interactive HIV and sexual health education to young players on the pitch. The informality of the football pitch allows young people to discuss intimate issues more freely, and the game itself means young people can play out the consequences of different decisions in an enjoyable and safe way. The WhizzKids program also provides youth with direct access to youth-friendly health services and support programs, all in one place.
Note: A dear friend and colleague has worked at Whizz since its inception. I took this photo (and many others) at her request to help capture the essence of the program.
